Introduction to My Writer's Choice Selection
The second blog assignment asked us to talk about a community in which we belong, and I chose to write about commuting to work. I chose this piece as my “writer’s choice” simply because I really enjoyed writing it, and I’ve noticed that throughout the quarter, the more I enjoyed writing about a topic, the more I liked what and how I wrote. Even though the blog assignments asked the writer to follow certain guidelines and answer specific questions, I still felt like there were less restraints and writing them was easy, fun and felt like kind of a break from the papers and discussion board posts. This one in particular was kind of light-hearted and I enjoyed writing about it so much, I thought including it in the portfolio was appropriate. I wrote here about some of the things that work against the cohesiveness of the community of commuters that I belong to: “In fact, while we all are technically part of a community of people who share a daily activity, there can actually be quite a bit of aggression at times between many of us. There is the occasional obscene gesture, although I don't see this too often, thank goodness. Tailgating is a frequent occurrence, though. Weaving in and out of lanes, trying to get home (or to work, in my case) a little faster is common also.” I remember writing this and thinking it summed up my commuting experience quite well.
